Showcase in May

These are the biggest shows coming to your screen this month including the highly anticipated Foxtel Original series Picnic At Hanging Rock…

Picnic At Hanging Rock

On Valentine’s Day, 1900, a group of schoolgirls from the local College take a day trip to dark and brooding Hanging Rock.  As the sun beats down and the picnic progresses, three girls and their governess go missing in the Australian bush.

A mysteriously vast narrative, as gripping as a true crime saga and as playful as the best contemporary fiction, the central narrative follows the impact of the disappearance on the students and staff of Appleyard College, their enigmatic and formidable headmistress and the township at large. All the elements are there. A compelling mystery, dangerous secrets, provocative scandals. Sex and murder. Love and death. Beauty and cruelty. An eccentric Gothic mansion, built with gold-rush winnings out in the Australian bush. A cast of relatable characters, twisting in a furnace of change and reinvention. A magnificent female antagonist, a handsome young hero, a rebellious young heroine. It explores the spreading stain of an unsolved mystery. Theories abound, secrets are exposed and hysteria sets in, until eventually, the lives of our characters unravel.

Each episode pieces together the events that led up to the disappearance. Pivotal moments are shown from conflicting view-points, creating fresh suspicions and unexpected suspects. Events at the picnic have a ripple effect. The stakes are high. The clock is ticking. Time plays tricks, as in the novel. Exposing glimpses of the characters’ pasts and futures.

Tapping into our fear of the unknown, the series explores issues of controlling sexuality more relevant than ever at this point in history, and speaks to modern notions of nationhood and identity.

Nature is the very heart of who we are. But can we control it?

Picnic At Hanging Rock premieres Sunday May 6th at 8.30pm AEST only on Foxtel’s showcase channel or stream all episodes on Foxtel On Demand.

C.B. Strike – Season 1

This dramatic series is based on the best-selling crime novels written by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Starring Tom Burke (“Only God Forgives”), the story centers on Strike, a war veteran turned private detective, operating out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street.

Although wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as a military police investigator prove crucial in solving three complex cases that have baffled the police.

The series launches with three one-hour episodes based on the first book in the trilogy, “The Cuckoo’s Calling” (directed by Michael Keillor), followed by adaptations of the remaining two books, “The Silkworm” (directed by Kieron Hawkes) and “Career of Evil” (directed by Charles Sturridge), both of which will consist of two one-hour episodes.

C.B. Strike premieres Tuesday May 1st at 9.30pm AEST only on Foxtel’s showcase channel or stream all episodes on Foxtel On Demand.

Ice – Season 1

This high-impact, serialised crime drama follows the Green family as they plunge into the underbelly of the Los Angeles diamond trade.

Jake Green (Cam Gigandet, Twilight) and Freddy Green (Jeremy Sisto, Six Feet Under) are half-brothers brought together by their father Isaac (Raymond J. Barry, Training Day) the patriarch behind Green & Green Diamonds, and their uncle Cam (Ray Winstone, The Departed). Golden Globe winning Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games) also stars as Pieter Van De Bruin, an African diamond merchant who ruthlessly controls the international diamond market and manipulates the rules of the game.

When wildcard Freddy kills a prominent diamond dealer, Jake must bail him out putting the family in debt to Sister Rah (Judith Shekoni, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn), a dangerous South African crime boss. Jake and Isaac are tasked with smuggling illegal blood diamonds into Vancouver where Freddy is kidnapped by a rival diamond cartel.

With the clock ticking and Freddy’s life hanging in the balance, Jake must hunt down the rival crew to save his brother’s life and the family business while maneuvering amongst jewelry thugs, high stakes deals, false certificates, and all the while risking federal imprisonment. Featuring a stellar on-screen cast and creative talent, ICE takes audiences from the gritty streets of LA to the great diamond houses of Antwerp, Belgium and the blood diamonds of Africa.

Ice premieres Wednesday May 2nd at 9.30pm AEST only on Foxtel’s showcase channel or stream all episodes on Foxtel On Demand.
